PET OF THE WEEK!
Libby is a shy little thing who loves her walks.
She came in as a stray – can you resist this sweet face?

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
HOW DO WE LOVE THEE?

Let us count the ways:
We fit in readily to everyday routines.
We grace your home with a spirit of quiet and peace.
Our friendship is as warm as sunshine or candlelight.
We put you in touch with your childhood memories,
and we tickle the fancy of your inner child.
Once we bond with you, we will indeed love you
With all our breath and body,
through the smiles and tears of all your life.
Love is appropriate in any season. Remember that all time spent without pets is time lost being happy. Dogs are wonderful companions for helping you get and stay in shape, and cats are well known for comfort in any weather.

Petco is now open for business, and Clatsop Animal Assistance has been approved to be an Adoption Partner with the store. We are showcasing some of our lovely shelter cats and kittens there, so be sure to stop by and say hello to them. And do say a thank you to the Petco staff members as well. They are extremely friendly and supportive to our local shelter.
Volunteers are needed to check in on the Petco cats each day. If you would like to sign up for a day, please visit the shelter to get more information. This position requires a visit to the store around the middle of the day for about an hour to make sure the cats have fresh food and water and to scoop their litter boxes along with a general tidying of each kennel. An extra bonus is you get some kitty love into the bargain.

It has been a whirlwind couple of months. Our annual Holiday Open House was well attended and proved very successful with regard to donations and fund raising for the animals. We have also celebrated several adoptions.
We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who donated silent auction and raffle items, baked goodies for the bake sale, and participated in the festivities. We look forward to a new year of working hard for the animals.

All the shelter animals need people -- Not only people to adopt them, but volunteers who will help with animal care. Our facility has the tremendous privilege of sheltering homeless pets for extended periods of time -- the time that is critically needed to find them new homes.
During their stay at the shelter, the animals need to be tended. This is a 7 days a week need. Due to budget constraints, staff members' time is limited. That is why volunteers make such a major difference in these lives and in the outcome of their stories. Volunteers are needed for both afternoon and morning shifts. Please consider giving some time to animal care! Volunteer applications are available at the shelter, and orientation can be scheduled at your convenience.
Of major help are dog walkers. Shelter dogs spend a lot of time inside a kennel. They so appreciate a break from this confined environment. Walking a shelter dog is not hard to do. Please call the shelter at 503/861-7387 to find out how you can make a waiting dog very happy. Exercise and outings go a long way toward helping the dogs get socialized and become more adoptable.
We are still getting adorable kittens in at the shelter. We also have some wonderful adult cats in the shelter who need homes. They are litter box trained, and most are used to getting along with other cats in a small space. Please stay tuned to the Petfinder link in order to see their photos and descriptions. And please consider donating Feline Pine brand cat litter when you want to make a donation to the shelter. Feline Pine is a lot less messy when it comes to two or more kittens using the box!!
A really great way to help the shelter avoid over-crowding is to provide temporary foster care homes for kittens or for moms who are still nursing their babies. That way, the time it takes to get kitties adopted will not occasion the dilemma which arises because of lack of space. We also like to give the cats coming in a chance at turned around lives. This means that a treatable illness can be overcome when the sick cat gets consistent medication. This calls for foster care too. There's nothing like one on one care for making sure a full course of medication can do its work.
Please call the shelter at 503/861-7387 after 12 noon Tuesdays through Saturdays to learn how to provide this important service.
And speaking of dogs, when you are driving out to the shelter, you may see volunteers walking the shelter dogs. Please drive by them slowly and carefully as there is not a lot of shoulder beside the road.
Our economy is making things difficult for a lot of people and their pets. CAA is committed to helping with pet emergencies, spay/neuter coupons, and of course providing for the shelter animals where the county budget does not stretch.
Our meetings are open to all, and there are no dues. We welcome new members at any time. The meetings are usually held the last Thursday of each month at the shelter at 6:00. In the early part of the year, we may hold meetings every other month. If there is any change to this schedule, it will be posted as far ahead of time as possible. People interested in attending a meeting can always telephone Linda Dygert at the animal shelter 503/861-7387 after 12 noon Tuesdays through Saturdays. The next meeting will announced.
We'd like to mention a short wish list for those who like to donate material goods and supplies to the shelter. The dogs need new Kong toys. They need to be the extra large size and black only. These hold up to the wear and tear better than any other toy. A dog cookie can be placed inside the Kongs, and these give the dogs hours of fun. We are also always in need of the plastic and hard rubber balls for cats to play with inside their kennels. These work better than soft toys since they can be properly sterilized.
Good quality dry puppy and dry kitten food is always a good item to donate too
