Thank You, Dee Carson!
“Scientists have discovered that the small, brave act of cooperating with another person, of choosing trust over cynicism, generosity over selfishness, makes the brain light up with quiet joy.” — Natalie Angier
Dee Carson, a volunteer who has been serving at the animal shelter since the spring of 2004, has performed many of those courageous acts of kindness. Dee’s upbringing on a farm where she considered all the animals her best friends suited her well for ministering to the cats who wait at the shelter for new homes.
Many people say, “Oh I couldn’t volunteer there, it would be too sad.” Or they protest, “I would want to take all the animals home!” Dee understands those feelings, but her common and practical sense told her making the animals’ time at the shelter happier with love and attention was a better way to improve their lives.
Dee expressed her love in a big way, not only cleaning cat kennels and helping the cats adjust to their new surroundings, she also tended the shelter cats who are showcased at Petco.
Dee affirms she is a “major cat lover” but “enjoys all animals God has placed on our earth.” From childhood, when she halter trained every calf born on her family’s farm, through twelve years of shelter volunteering, to the present as she retires from regular kennel cleaning, Dee has consistently carried out her philosophy of caring animal stewardship.
Although Dee is stepping back from scheduled weekly shifts, she intends to continue doing whatever she can whenever she can.
When we asked her what advice or encouragement she would give to someone thinking about volunteering at the animal shelter, Dee readily responded, “Don’t hesitate at all if you are interested in helping out in any way… It is a great place to put your efforts to help all of the animals that need lots of love and care as they go through a difficult time in their lives in adjusting to a new situation. Just LOVE all the animals and you will be greatly rewarded with their love for you!”
